The story of Chekaram
Dating as far back as the 16th century, the original home was a traditional single-story dwelling. Built on three sides around a central courtyard, with four orange trees, it was made from wood and clay bricks mixed with animal hair and finished with painted tiles and plaster. It was built directly onto the earth with little foundations.
During renovations a silver Spanish coin from 1802, an old stone oil vessel and other historical pieces were found under the floors. We think that the building may have belonged to one of Marrakech’s many merchant family’s and this seems to confirm that theory. Cherif knew the family and history of the area and it was through his contacts that we knew 189 Dar El Bomba was available to purchase.
The friendships we made...
The visit itself was not planned to be a life changing adventure! Just a typical quick weekend break with my sister Jennie and daughter Katie, away from the dreary winter weather and working grind of London. But it was during that trip, as we walked the colourful maze of streets and alleyways that make up the Medina in the heart of Marrakech, that we met Rida and his family. It was an encounter that led to a deep and lasting friendship with a wonderful mum who has adopted me into her amazing family, and a partnership with her son which has enabled me to fulfil a dream I never believed possible.
